John Means

“Guiding Golfers to Collegiate Success, One Swing at a Time.”

John’s coaching career is defined by excellence, having earned two of collegiate golf’s most prestigious honors. He was named Coach of the Century by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and in 2013, he was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame—an achievement reserved for the sport’s most accomplished leaders.

Since beginning his coaching journey in 1978, John has built and led successful programs at several institutions, including Colorado State, the United States Military Academy, and the University of Minnesota. His teams have consistently excelled, participating in 24 NCAA championships, with top finishes at 1st, 2nd, and 4th place. At the University of Idaho, his leadership propelled the men’s team to more tournament titles in two years than in the entire history of the program.

John’s impact on the game extends beyond his teams. He has recruited and coached two individual NCAA champions and served as President of the Golf Coaches Association of America, where he spent a decade on the Board of Directors. His deep connections with college golf coaches and in-depth knowledge of NCAA and NAIA rules have led over 100 of his students to collegiate golf careers.
